The Story Behind Sports Connect

Chapter 1 β€” The Stress of Finding a Tournament Sub

One of the key sparks for Sports Connect came from playing in a table tennis team league. We competed regularly as a team, but every so often, one or two members couldn't make it to a scheduled match. That meant scrambling to find a substitute β€” reaching out to friends and acquaintances one by one, hoping someone was free and at the right skill level.

It was always a stressful process. Sometimes the right person wasn't available. Sometimes you just didn't know enough people in the area. As the match approached and the messages went unanswered, the anxiety of potentially having to forfeit a game was very real.

"If only there were a simple way to post a request β€” with the date, venue, level required β€” and let interested players respond." That frustration planted the first seed for this platform.

Chapter 2 β€” Backpacking Southeast Asia with a Paddle

The second spark came from a very different context: backpacking through Southeast Asia. I always brought my table tennis paddle on my travels and made it a point to find places to play in each country I visited.

Finding local clubs or practice partners required a lot of legwork. I'd search Facebook groups, send messages via Instagram, dig through email threads, and even ask hotel staff for tips. Different channels for different countries, different conversations to start from scratch each time. It worked β€” but it was inefficient and time-consuming.

Despite the effort, those connections were genuinely wonderful. In Cambodia, I ended up playing against Chinese tourists who were also passing through. We had no shared spoken language to speak of, but the moment we faced each other across the table, everything fell into place naturally. We laughed, competed, and left as friends of sorts.

"Table tennis became our common language β€” no translation needed."

One Platform for Everyone

That experience crystallized the idea: what if there were a single platform where you could find a practice partner or a session β€” whether you're at home or halfway around the world? You wouldn't have to piece together contacts from a dozen different sources. You could just search, post, and connect.

The need at home β€” quickly finding subs for team matches β€” and the need abroad β€” locating players while traveling β€” were both the same problem at their core: information about who's available and where was scattered and hard to access. Sports Connect was built to bring all of that into one place.

What "Sports Connect" Means

The name says it all: connecting people through sport. We believe that matches β€” whether a quick hit at a local gym or a spontaneous game with a stranger in a foreign country β€” create bonds that go beyond sport itself.

We started with table tennis because it's the sport we know best, and because it has this remarkable ability to cross cultural and language boundaries with ease. From there, we plan to grow to include tennis, badminton, and more sports β€” building a global matching platform where anyone, anywhere can find a game.

That's the dream behind Sports Connect: more games, more connections, more joy β€” through sport.
